For the development of my work I wanted to present the old fashioned, dated family portraits in relation to Tina Barneys work, and I wanted to present the more candid side of developing family portraits and how you are able to portray and capture relationships more easily with the development of family photography. This is due to their natural and comfortable nature rather than the structured unrealistic imagery of early portraiture.
For the candid developments of my project I developed my responses from, Simon Dewey, Jaret Belliveau, and Angela Strassheim who all have a documentary element to their work. Simon Dewey's work is about documenting the ordinary ,every day, family life. Jaret Belliveau's work focuses on the way the daily comes together in significant or life changing events for example, births, deaths and illness. Angela Strassheim takes photos that appear to be slightly more staged and aims to portray the way the family teaches the younger generations and how the older generations routines come into other members of the families life due to the influence they had on their lives. Although Angela Strassheims work is slightly more set up, elements of her work show the way the family is teaching and learning from each other from and outsiders point of view looking in on conversations and exchanges between different groups within the family. Furthermore the responses and developments I have done and intend to do all emphasise the idea of looking in on the way family life and relationships play out, and how mothers and fathers nurture the younger generations.
I will develop from my responses to these three photographers with 'through the doorway'. This series will emphasises the idea of photographing without knowledge. Whereby, I will take shots that appear to be taken out of the knowledge of the people in them. To depict this in an aesthetic way I will use doorways to show how the scenario within the doorframe is something between the people in them and not for the view of the rest of society. This will also show the candid and natural side of the family in that with new technology and modern views, the family can be presented in a realistic and 'normal' form, and doesn't have to be privatised and formalised for a photo to appear to be professionally done. It is often in those playful moments that the relationships between family members are portrayed the most.
For the old fashioned portrait developments I am developing the responses from looking at portraiture over the years and how photography has developed from statuesque positioning to playful documentaries. I am using Tina Barney to develop this idea of old fashioned family portraits and how they've evolved over the years as she took photos of her family getting ready for a family photo and she managed to show the actual relationships between them without the harsh poker faces. To develop on this, I am going to take photos of my own family and the groups within the family, looking strategically positioned and set up to replicate the old family portrait style and then have the comparison of them getting ready to pose for it, laughing and relaxed to show the difference between the two styles and to portray the amount of empathy you can achieve when the photos aren't so posed.
I am also going to develop my work using Clare Gallagher as inspiration. She takes photographs ''through the eyes of her children''. For example, looking at how they see the world and the adventure and curiosity is portrayed through the photos she takes of her children. I wanted to incorporate this into my projects. To do this I am going to take close up photographs of my nephews features to symbolise the innocent and fragile nature of a new addition to the family. I will also bring in the idea of generation which runs through my whole project. I will do this by using my mum and dad (the grandparents) and also the other members of the family to show the different generations within my family. This will also tie in with the Jaret Belliveau responses I did which look at the effect a major event has on the family. He portrays how the family has to adapt and change to different situations and how the event effects the rest of the family; he used his mum's cancer I will use my sister's son.
